Flood Recovery in Joso, Ibaraki

Joso City is located on the western border of Tsukuba City, where many of us live and work.  When the flooding happened on September 10, 2015, we were compelled to help our friends and neighbours next door.  Here is how we have been helping.

  1.  Translating information about the disaster and the recovery efforts so the local non-Japanese population can understand what is happening and contribute to the response.
  2. Visiting shelters in Tsukuba to assess needs and offer donations.
  3. Making connections with families in shelters to identify needs and provide assistance, where possible.
  4. Volunteering in the clean-up efforts in Joso.
  5. Collecting donations that can be used to purchase goods for shelters or given directly to the people affected by the flood.

Report on Activities

  • We used the “Team Tsukuba” Facebook group to share information and give advice about volunteering in Joso.
  • We visited shelters to talk with families and bring in donations of items that would make the families more comfortable while they were staying in the shelter.
  • Tsukuba International School adopted four families.  The staff and students collected over 600,000 yen in donations.  Through a combination of finding used goods and buying new items, they supplied the four families with futons, blankets, pillows, towels, refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves, heaters, rice cookers, TVs, vacuum cleaners, and some school supplies.  They also purchased rubber boots and winter coats for the children in the families.
  • Many individuals went to Joso to volunteer in the clean-up efforts.
